Our Story
Drafts and Crafts was born from a shared dream of two passionate founders — Joshi Rabiyath, a business management and IT professional from Kerala, and Nazakat Hussain, a master handicraft manufacturer from Moradabad, whose family has been creating timeless wooden artistry for generations.
Though from different worlds, Joshi and Nazakat found common ground in their deep admiration for India’s wooden craft traditions. Their vision was simple yet powerful — to preserve these age-old skills, create sustainable livelihoods for artisans, and bring the timeless beauty of Indian craftsmanship to the global stage.
Our Mission
Our mission is to connect India’s rich artisan heritage from the workshops of Moradabad to homes across the world. We work with self-help groups and skilled craftsmen to give them access to global markets. By promoting GI-tagged wooden crafts, we preserve cultural artistry while creating sustainable livelihoods in rural communities.
Moradabad – The Wooden Craft Hub
Moradabad, a city in northern India, is famous worldwide for its brassware, but it also has a growing tradition of beautiful wooden handicrafts. This craft industry began in the early 1900s when skilled carpenters from nearby areas brought their woodworking skills to the city.
The industry provides livelihoods for around 20,000 craftspeople, many working in small family workshops. The wood they use includes mango, Indian rosewood (sheesham), and acacia, carefully shaped, carved, and polished by hand.
Most of Moradabad’s wooden products are sold internationally, especially in Europe, North America, and the Middle East, often alongside the city’s brass products.
Crafts we Celebrate
At Drafts and Crafts, we are proud to share the beautiful work of Moradabad’s wood artisans. They use rosewood to make products with special patterns called naqqashi, a skill that has been taught from master to apprentice for many years. Each piece starts with good-quality rosewood, carved carefully by hand, and finished with unique designs that mix old traditions with modern style.
